Site Safety Training (SST) Courses

This course is designed to train workers to gain the ability to recognize and avoid safety hazards associated with supported scaffold use. Learners will be instructed on the importance of safety controls, fall prevention equipment, inspections and emergency planning.

Approved by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), this course provides four (4) hours of Site Safety Training (SST) credits that NYC construction workers can apply toward their full SST card.

This course is a requirement that can be acquired by an individual applying for a Site Safety Training Card. It is also a required course for individuals seeking to renew their 40-Hour Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator Certificate.

The 8-Hour Site Safety Manager Refresher/Chapter 33 course is an intensive review of topics covered in the DOB 40-hour Site Safety Manager Training course.

This refresher course covers construction worksite safety management, accident prevention and NYC safety regulations. It also provides a review of OSHA 1926 standards and New York City Construction Codes, including Chapter 33 on required safeguards for construction and demolition work.

10-Hour Site Safety Training Program

If you already have an OSHA 30 card, you only need to complete 10 additional hours of DOB-approved Site Safety Training (SST) in order to obtain a 40-Hour Site Safety Training completion card.

Our 10-Hour SST Course program is a comprehensive program consisting of two NYC DOB-approved SST prescribed courses:

  • 8-Hour Fall Prevention 
  • 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness

This course is a requirement for an individual to use or work on a Suspended Scaffold in New York City.

This course teaches workers how to safely perform duties on suspended scaffolds. Entry level workers who have never used suspended scaffolds before may take this course, and may work on suspended scaffolds after obtaining additional certifications. Managers, supervisors, and licensed safety managers and coordinators could also benefit from this course.

This 22-Hour program provided by A.S.T. is a package of nine (9) courses approved by the NYC Department of Buildings that are required in order for an individual to obtain a 62 Hour Site Safety Supervisor Card. This program is specifically designed for individuals who:

  • Have already completed an OSHA 30 Construction Safety & Health Standards Course and possess a valid OSHA 30 Construction course completion card.
  • Have already completed both the 8-Hour Fall Prevention and 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness courses (as part of a 10 Hour SST Program or otherwise), and may already possess a 40-Hour Site Safety Training Card.

This 32-Hour program provided by A.S.T. is a package of eleven (11) courses approved by the NYC Department of Buildings that are required in order for an individual to obtain a 62 Hour Site Safety Supervisor Card. This program is specifically designed for individuals who:

  • Have already completed an OSHA 30 Construction Safety & Health Standards Course and possess a valid OSHA 30 Construction course completion card.

This course is one of the pre-requisites an applicant must successfully complete before being eligible to apply for Site Safety Manager Certificate Examination.

In addition, this course fulfills the training course requirements for Site Safety Coordinator and Construction Superintendent Certification in New York City. It is a comprehensive review of chapter 33 and the rules of the City of New York with regard to protecting the public. Prospective learners will become familiar with safe work practices in alignment with NYC rules and regulations in preparation for the Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator exam.

DOB-Approved Site Safety Training

Fully phased-in on March 1, 2021, Local Law 196 requires that workers at certain job sites receive 40 hours of safety training and supervisors receive 62 hours of safety training.

The job sites to which Local Law 196 is applicable are sites that are required to designate a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator or Site Safety Manager. The workers and supervisors to which Local Law 196 is applicable are workers and supervisors who engage in construction or demolition work at the aforementioned sites.

“I’m a construction worker; do I need to meet the Local Law 196 training requirements?”

You need to meet the Local Law 196 training requirements if you are a construction worker at a site that is required to designate a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator or Site Safety Manager. If you are a worker, you need 40 hours of training. If you are a supervisor, which includes Construction Superintendents, Site Safety Coordinators, Site Safety Managers, Concrete Safety Managers, and competent persons, you need 62 hours of training.
